Windows 7 SP1 and the desktop gadget "Calendar" that comes with Windows 7
Hi The "calendar" gadget that came with Windows 7 home Premium worked very well until I installed Windows 7 SP1. Since the installation of Windows 7 SP1, it comes up empty (just an orange square with no date in it) when I boot my machine. I have to reboot/restart my machine 1 or 2 times to get the calendar showing the date. Does somebody else have this problem too ?

Stop the sidebar.exe process. Use regedit and delete the key "." under [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\. ]. http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproappcompat/thread/7db67ff2-22bd-4dca-8fa0-c233d0a8dd53"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

Hi Andre Thanks for your answer. Unfortunately the the key "." does not exist in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\ Also the link http://social.technet.microsoft.com/Forums/en/w7itproappcompat/thread/7db67ff2-22bd-4dca-8fa0-c233d0a8dd53 that you sent does not work : page not found. B.t.w. the other desktop gadgets work OK. It is only the "Calendar" gadget that does not behave the way it should. The problem started after the installation of SP1.

Does somebody else have this problem too ? I've also had the calender stay blank red, several times, with two different computers. One 64-bit, the other 32-bit. Kind of unpredictable. Gadgets. Always flakey.

no. But I must say, that I don't use the sidebar/gadgets very often."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

Good decision. But I must say. I still love my Vista gadgets anyway. If they'd just all appear. And in the same order each time. And not say Service Unavailable.

Hi Andre I tried the registry patch : it didn't solve the problem. I restored my hard disk with the image that I made before I installed and the problem was gone. Then I installed SP1 again and the problem was back immediately. Only the Calendar gadget has the problem, the other gadgets "Currency" and "weather" continue to work properly. It has definitely something to do with SP1 because the problem reappeared immediately after the installation of SP1.

run sfc /scannow to see if some Windows files have been damaged during Sp1 install."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

According to sfc /scannow, my system is OK. I restored my system with an image that I made before the installation. It doesn't have the "calendar" problem. I guess that I have no other choice than to continue without SP1.

try it again and run Process Monitor in background and look for failed operations of the sidebar.exe-"A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

Same problem. The calendar-gadget comes up at random with no text in it when I boot my machine. Sometimes it comes up OK, most of the time it comes up with no text in it. The other gadgets do just fine. The problem occurs as soon as I install Windows 7 SP1. I have another identical machine (same hardware, same software) on which it works OK.

simply start it, next put the gadget on the desktop and after the loading of the gadget, stop the trace. Now set the filter in PM to include only sidebar.exe. Look at the events for failures of Registry or Disk activites."A programmer is just a tool which converts caffeine into code" CLIP- Stellvertreter http://www.winvistaside.de/

Hi Andre I am sorry but I thought that it was a tool already available in Windows. I looked for it and I couldn't find it. I should have looked for it via Google myself - my mistake. Anyway I have downed it, ran it, and it does not show any inconvenience w.r.t. the calendar gadget (or any other sidebar gadget for that matter). It really looks like it is an SP1 glitch.

Mine somehow cleared up. I don't know how. But I tried to read its jscript and did some experiments. I was able to reproduce the problem. I take it you also have the Clock gadget onscreen. What I found is that if the Clock is first to be initialized, and the Calendar is second, then the Calendar malfunctions with that solid orange page. Said a little differently, when you first install the gadgets, the Calendar must be installed first. Then the Clock second. Otherwise it goofs-up. Lol. Weird. The easiest way to solve it is this: (1) Delete all the gadgets from the desktop. (2) Delete the file %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Settings.ini (3) Right-click the desktop, click Gadgets, and install the Calendar gadget FIRST. Then the others. Alternative steps: Kill the Sidebar.exe process in Task Manager. Then edit the Settings.ini file, replacing dockedCalendarDivType="dow" with ="day". Then restart Sidebar (%ProgramFiles%\Windows Sidebar\Sidebar.exe) or simply reboot. It worked for me.

Hi I have tried the easiest way. It looked OK at first but after a reboot, the calendar was blank again. Then I tried the alternative steps The settings.ini file does however not contain "dockedCalendarDivType" Not there? On my systems, the moment I install the Calendar gadget, a [Section n] containing that entry is written to Settings.ini. Try this. Reboot fresh. Then do steps 1-3, but install only the Calendar gadget and nothing else. The Calendar starts out on its orange day-of-week front page. Double-click it to get to the normal white full month display page. Don't do anything else to the Calendar. Just leave it like that. Now verify dockedCalendarDivType="day" is there in Settings.ini. %userprofile%\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Sidebar\Settings.ini Is it there? Assuming yes, then reboot and recheck. Is it still there?

Hi I have the following gadgets Currency (comes with Windows 7) Weather (comes with Windows 7) Clock (comes with Windows 7) Calendar (comes with Windows 7) N-Converter (from a third party : Netzsch) Observation 1 "Calendar" works fine as long as I do not add "Clock" I have tried all possible combinations of the 5 above mentioned gadgets and "Calendar" stops working correctly each time I add "Clock" to my desktop. Observation 2 This problem occurs only when Windows 7 SP1 is installed. The problem with "Calendar" disappears as soon as I go back to a non-SP1 situation on my system.

I have done that several times in vain. As a matter of fact, I have tried all the suggestions by everybody in this tread. The only possible conclusion is that under Win7-SP1 the clock and calendar gadgets fight one another.

Good find. That's derived from support.microsoft.com/kb/2515657 ("Windows7 Gadgets may not work or display properly"). It's basically what Andre originally suggested. Should we ProposeAnswer Andre's first reply? ...Nahhhh :)

Mine came back for a visit. The registry settings seem ok according to support.microsoft.com/kb/2515657. I'll try a few reboots. Yep. That fixed it. I knew it would. :P
